F**K THE BOXES
Choreography:
Jonathan Breton
Duration:
15 min
Piece for 2 dancers.
ABOUT THE STRATES PROJECT:
"the weight of the administration, the aberrations of bureaucracy and the need to fit into the boxes"
The piece TEAR is part of the STRATES project: from a common synopsis, two diametrically opposed creations are created to illustrate the subject in two different registers: TEAR, in a dramatic register and F ** K THE BOXES in a comic register.
The objective of this double choreographic writing is to highlight the richness of the power of creation and to bring the creator to apprehend the text with a new look, in order to interpret it in different ways. It is an invitation to reinvent oneself, to question one's creative process and inspirations and to stimulate the power of the imagination.
It is finally a method allowing an uncensored writing, calling to ignore the codes and to create new ones, in order to propose two works that are both twin and foreign.
THE PIECE F**K THE BOXES :
Male duet that questions standards in a light and comical way.
From an administrative and often societal point of view, we must fit into the boxes, correspond to established or expected models. Boxes in which it is sometimes difficult to find one's way, but compulsory to fit in to be considered. We are then confronted with a real "dictatorship of the boxes".
In "F ** K THE BOXES", our two little dictator dancers are then confronted with people who do not fit into these boxes and who do not correspond to standards, expectations, predefined frameworks. A burlesque exchange is then created between these two ways of thinking and being.

THE PIECE TEAR :
"TEAR" is a piece directly inspired by testimonies of people who, in various situations, did not fit into the boxes or the expectations of society and thus felt excluded. The piece questions these power struggles, sometimes violent, and the power that words, or even rejection, can have over an individual.
In developing the choreographic language specific to this piece, the choreographer was inspired by sculptures by Rodin, whose work was criticized by his contemporaries because he himself then stood out from the tradition and codes of the time ( sources of inspiration: The Thinker, La Danaïde, L'Age d'Airain, Le Cri, La Main Crispée).
An adaptation of the text "Meditating on the dispositions of my soul ..." by Jean-Jacques Rousseau completes the musical score.

HOME
creation 2020
Piece for 4 dancers.
HOME explores themes related to identity, history, family, country of origin, immigration, emigration and sense of belonging. More broadly, it explores the meaning of what the term "house" can represent. Is it a place? Is it a material, spiritual thing? Is it an idea, an ideal, or even a lost memory?
Built around an original scenography and based on the personal experiences of different populations (migrants, prisoners, children, people with autism ...), "HOME" is a topical piece both in its contemporary artistic form and in the social and cultural current issues raised.
"I hope through this piece that I can make the dancers forget that they are on stage and the audience that they are in a theater and that both of them can feel 'at home'. I also hope that upon seeing this play, the audience will question their own definition of the term, "home" and that it will help to better understand their neighbor, to be more tolerant and more empathetic. At a time when the forced migrations of peoples in search of a new "home" are more topical than ever, I hope to bring the public to reflection and that those who are safe at home agree to open their doors, while those who are in search of security dare knock at their doors".

TRIO
creation 2019
Choreography:
Jonathan Breton & Alexandre Balmain
Duration:
14 min
Piece for 3 dancers.
TRIO explores the symbolism of the number 3, from a geometric, anatomical, philosophical, scientific and metaphysical point of view. It questions the deep nature of man, especially in his male / female duality, a component of each being, and studies the themes of confinement, group strength and trust.
Through a scenography showing on stage a triangle with an evolving shape, the piece is inspired by the 3 phases of existence present in nature: birth / evolution / transformation.
TRIO is an athletic and explosive piece inspired by one of the richest symbols of humanity, in which a strong and intense relationship is created between the dancers.

RAIN
Choreography:
Jonathan Breton
Duration:
30 min
Piece for 7 dancers.
The RAIN piece studies our relationship to rain. What is it like when you see, feel or hear rain for the first time, and how are these sensations reflected in the body? This piece was particularly inspired by the reactions of young children who come into contact with rain for the first time.
On a second level, the piece offers a parallel between rain and the human body. Depending on where the rain falls, it can be beneficial (watering nature, filling rivers ...) or harmful (stagnant water ...). From this same principle, the human body builds and develops according to the life experiences with which it is confronted. The piece thus studies how these hazards influence the physical and psychological development of an individual.
One of the musical sections of the piece was created in collaboration with composer Arthur Abrams, who worked with Merce Cunningham.

BLACK SAND
Choreography:
Jonathan Breton & Alexandre Balmain
Duration:
12 min
Piece for 2 dancers.
BLACK SAND is a duet that explores themes related to conflict, the notion of choice and human relationships.
Black sand contrasts in its symbolism with the image of "white sand" that is commonly associated with a heavenly place, sometimes utopian. The piece thus offers a parallel between this image of white sand and the reality of human relationships and everyday situations. A more conflictual, less idyllic daily life. A reality that forces you to make choices. The essence of "choice" being to say no to some things, so that you can say yes to others. And this power of being able to make choices opens up an infinite range of possibilities.
The piece also draws on the creative power of men, when they are called upon to work together. Thus, sand can be quantified in units or multiples. A single grain of sand is small, insignificant, while a multitude of grains form a beach and immense and sumptuous landscapes.
The piece Black Sand is the result of a collaboration between 2 choreographers working together to give life to a piece mixing their universes, nourrished by their differences. A work that forced them to listen to one another and to "make choices".
Like two grains of sand that come together to give birth to something bigger, a beach, not simply made of white sand, but made of a sand with a symbolic color representing human relations and a reality embellished with the unknown , concessions and surprises.

MADELEINE
Choreography :
Jonathan Breton
Duration :
28 min
creation 2016
Piece for 8-10 dancers.
MADELEINE explores themes linked to duality, attachment and the course of life.
Madeleine Josso, the person who inspired this piece, lived in France in the Centre-Val de Loire region from 1913 to 2011. She was a very small person but with unparalleled charisma. Describing this woman in words would not be easy. So, we tried to translate her spirit and her essence into movement.
The piece is particularly concerned with her marriage. At a time when the act of marriage was very different from today, the play seeks to define the different states of mind through which the future bride could go. From excitement to fear, from the unknown to discovery, from being alone to the union with another being.
In addition to the precise moment of the marriage, the play questions the symbolism of this act and the marriage in general, the idea of it and the impact of this act on a person's life.
Finally, Madeleine Josso having lived through the 2 world wars in France, this historical imprint is also symbolized in this piece.

AD AETERNAM
Choreography:
Jonathan Breton
Duration:
10 min
Piece for 6 dancers.
AD AETERNAM was inspired by a wound. The injured body of the dancer which no longer allows him to exercise his art. A knee, which no longer allows him mobility or support. This piece thus seeks to portray the resilience of the artist, who, like an immutable and vital need, will practice his art at all costs. Dressed in a simple orange sheet which will then symbolize his legs, the artist will find his way back to the stage and to expression.
In the second section, the piece explores the character of man as a social animal. His need for contact, to be with his peers and the need for recognition by them.
From a philosophical point of view, the existence of a self would be intrinsically linked to the perception that the other has of itself. If we don't exist in the eyes of our peers, we don't exist. The piece then seeks to study the power of this link that is created between people and the influence that results from it.

ON THE EDGE
Choreography:
Jonathan Breton
Duration:
5 min
Piece for 1 dancer.
The piece ON THE EDGE is a "risk-taking" piece exploring the themes of body awareness and the present moment. It invites the artist and the audience to renew themselves in their respective experience of the show.
This piece danced blindly forces the performer to focus on the present moment, to listen to his sensory perceptions and to disregard all thoughts other than those related to the execution of the choreography.
She also encourages the public to find new ways of emotional connection with the performer whose face and in particular the eyes, essential means of expression, are hidden.
ON THE EDGE is thus an invitation to get rid of facial expression to connect with the emotion of the body in motion. It is also an additional challenge for the performer who cannot count on his face to create an exchange with the audience and who must then be able to make them feel his story through movement and through his body, the only vessel communicating to his disposition.
NB: the solos MEMORIES and ON THE EDGE are often performed together to offer a 9 minutes piece.

MEMORIES
CONNECTIONS
creations 2014
Choreography:
Jonathan Breton
Duration:
Memories : 4 min / Connections : 8 min
Pieces respectively for 1 and 7 dancers.
The solo MEMORIES gave life to a group piece, CONNECTIONS, into which it fits by inviting additional performers to gravitate around the soloist. It is an invitation to connect with the other and, for a time, to join his path of life. This invitation also symbolizes the encounters that can be made during a lifetime; there are the passing encounters, there are the memorable, eternal encounters.
MEMORIES and CONNECTIONS are inspired from the novel "Une Vie", by French author Maupassant.
These pieces study how one life intertwines with others. How is it inspired, touched, transformed, influenced by them. There are these passing encounters, which for one day, or even ten years, accompany us, then there are the eternal encounters which, like soul mates, accompany us along the way.
Whether it is one or the other category, how do we experience the loss of the being encountered, what is the strength and the fragility of memories and towards what new impulses can these events lead us.
NB: the solos MEMORIES and ON THE EDGE are often performed together to offer a 9 minutes piece.

INTIMITE
Choreography:
Jonathan Breton
Duration:
7 min
Piece for 1 dancer.
INTIMITE seeks to question the self-protection process of an individual.
To protect themselves, men sets limits on themselves, whether it's because of fear, lack of confidence or even following a trauma. These mental barriers symbolize this comfort zone that we must leave in order to evolve, surpass ourselves and achieve ourselves.
The play offers a parallel with the fetus which is about to come into the world. Once out of his "prenatal cradle", everything possible opens up to it, with an infinite power of creation.
INTIMITE offers a reflection on our own limitations and an invitation to leave our comfort zone to be reborn and regain access to this power of creation and personal realization.
Choreographed for la Compagnie de l'Etoie in Paris, in 2012, the piece is added to d'AZOTH Dance Theatre's repertory in 2018 at the occasion of a performance at the Tank Theatre (New York, USA)
